Division of Cardiology

The Division of Cardiology experienced striking growth in its clinical and research operations. The year was marked by innovation, capital improvements, growth in research funding, and accomplishments in our structural heart specialties, advanced heart failure initiatives, outreach activities, and development of the UPMC cardiovascular service line.

Division of Clinical Pharmacology

The Center for Clinical Pharmacology connects the gap between laboratory science and medical practice for many spheres of medicine, including critical care medicine, head trauma, cardiopulmonary medicine, hepatology, and oncology.

Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism

The University of Pittsburgh Diabetes Institute, in partnership with UPMC, has developed and validated the nation's largest diabetes registry, with more than 185,000 individuals with diabetes cared for at UPMC hospitals and outpatient facilities in western Pennsylvania.

Division of Gastroenterology Hepatology, and Nutrition

The Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition has the third-largest pancreatic cancer inpatient service in the United States, and one of the largest inflammatory bowel disease centers in the country.

Division of General Internal Medicine

The Division of General Internal Medicine's main clinical practice continues to exceed national targets. Even with complex cases and vulnerable special populations in the resident clinic and refugee service, the practice ranks 5th out of 77 university physician practices in preventive health care.

Division of Geriatrics

Our national experts are re-examining current practice in each care setting–from the ground up. By developing an innovative approach to hospital care–one that is pre-emptive, team-led, and systems-based–we've not only cut length of stay and costs, but also reduced readmission rates for the elderly to three-fold less than the national average.

Division of Hematology-Oncology

The main priorities of the Division of Hematology-Oncology last year were maintaining excellence in patient care, research, and education. Toward that end, we focused on physician recruitment, reorganization of the clinical services, and the education and training of the hematology-oncology fellows and medicine house staff.

Division of Infectious Diseases

The infection control program developed by the Division of Infectious Diseases has been extremely successful in reducing health care-acquired infection rates at UPMC facilities. Our model of infection control has been adopted by many health care organizations across the country.

Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine

UPMC is widely recognized as a leader in the treatment of respiratory disease. Our surgeons have performed more than 1,400 lung and combined heart-lung transplants since the program's inception in 1982, and have averaged more than 100 per year for the last five years.

Renal-Electrolyte Division

Nephrologists from the Renal-Electrolyte Division provide a multidisciplinary approach to ensure the well-being of patients with the most complex kidney and/or electrolyte disorders. We've had vast experience and impressive results in continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis, automated cycler peritoneal dialysis, and home hemodialysis.

Division of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology

UPMC has been named one of the top 10 programs for rheumatology in the nation by the U.S. News & World Report survey every year since 2007, and continues to be a worldwide leader clinically, academically, and in cutting-edge research.

Vascular Medicine Institute

The Vascular Medicine Institute performs rigorous, cutting-edge basic and translational research in vascular biology, guided by a systems biology view of the vasculature, where blood flow is regulated by the vessel, circulating molecules, and blood cells.
